MASTER LIGHT IN THE DARK

The Redline Challenge is for ambitious amateur photographers who want to challenge their creativity and test their technical know-how.

“Lorenz Holder invites you to explore the exciting possibilities of shooting in low-light, capturing the ever-intriguing relationship between light and shadow, colour and contrast.”

MASTER LIGHT IN THE DARK: LIGHT PAINTING - INSPIRED BY LORENZ HOLDER

I dipped my toes in to light painting for the Canon RedlineChallenge by taking some pictures of my Canon gear on my desk at home and a flashlight in hand. This makes for a simple setup, but I really enjoyed creating these and I think I should be proud of the result - plus eager to try more light painting in the future!

National Geographic photo contest 2020

a submission of three pictures in three different categories

  • Animal - A pair of swans and their cygnets

    • At junction 91 of the cycle path network, in Bokrijk, you can literally cycle through the water. The path runs straight through the pond from one side of the bank all the way to the other side. At the middle of the path, the water surface is at eye height at both sides. This makes for a unique perspective and the perfect opportunity to for example capture and admire these beautiful swans with their cygnets while they are coasting majestically at less then 1 meter from you.

  • Landscape - Panoramic view of the roque nublo

    • From one of the viewpoints at the Pico de las Nieves you are able to enjoy this panoramic view of the Roque Nublo (center of the image). The Roque Nublo is a volcanic stone situated in the center of Gran Canaria within the natural park called Parque Rural del Nublo. At the top right corner of the image, hidden behind the clouds, you can also see Tenerife and its volcano Teide.

  • Human - Deep thoughts

    • When visiting one of the temples in Kamakura, I walked passed this lady. With her eyes closed, she seemed to be in deep thoughts. Although she sat there peacefully, she did not seem to care to follow the indicated rules next to her.

Be creative with reflections

ILLUSION?

For this challenge, I chose to take a photograph of me taking a picture with an analogue camera. The reflection is no illusion either, I namely positioned my tripod exactly on the spot where you would see that reflection. In other words, the mirror’s reflection you see in these pictures is real! Apart from the reflection element, I also tried to show the contrast between the object (the mirror in this case) and its environment (nature). Their only relation to each and other is the reflection in the mirror - which in itself tells a story too: me taking a picture. And thus, this is my story element. Finally, these images were taken in Kortrijk, in the Groeningepark.
